Trimester 3 Portfolio

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

I’m going to talk about my best work in 3 of my classes.

Social Studies:
This trimester in Social Studies, we learned about Queen Liliuokalani and her overthrow. I chose the US Marines involvement, which they were against Queen Liliuokalani. I picked symbolism out of the three. The eagle was the US Marines, the Iolani Palace was Queen Liliuokalani, and the snow globe was resembling how Queen Liliuokalani had no power anymore.
These were the directions:
1.  Pick an issue about the Queen’s overthrow (overthrow, Bayonet Constitution, Queen’s new constitution, Provisional Government, US Marines involvement).
2.  Take a POV, either For or Against.the issue you picked on #1.
3.  Use one, two, or all three writing elements:
– hyperbole
– sarcasm
– symbolism
4.  Make sure it’s colored and done to the best of your ability for an A.

Language Arts:
In Language Arts, my best work would probably be my Group Reading Discussion paper/Group Reading Questions because I was with hmsmone and hmsleilani. We were assigned the book named “American Born Chinese” which is a graphic novel book. While we read the book, we had to think about thought-provoking questions, then discuss them as a group. I think our group did well communicating, though we had a hard time understanding what we needed to do.

This is what we had to do and the paragraph is my answers to all the questions below:

Group Reading Reflection

    1. Were you able to complete the readings on time?  Why or why not?
    2. Comment on the book.  What did you like? Dislike?
    3. About how many questions did you come up with?
    4. What percentage of your questions were thought-provoking?
    5. What were the high points of discussing your questions as a group?
    6. What are the aspects you would like to change about discussing your questions as a group?
    7. What percentage grade would you give yourself for your efforts?

The book that was given to me, Leilani and Mone was “American Born Chinese”. I completed the readings on time because we decided to read the whole book in one day. I liked how there were three stories in one that came altogether at the end, which made the book make even more sense. I didn’t like how there were little parts that didn’t all come together like how we didn’t know who Chin-Kee was really. I came up with about 8-9 questions and about 50% were thought-provoking. Some high points of discussing my questions as a group was that everyone listened and they took the questions into consideration. I would change anything, but one thing is they come up with questions and sharing all of them with each other. I would grade myself 95% because I tried my hardest but I think I could’ve put more questions on my paper.

Math:
In March, we started learning about probability and odds. The questions were from our math textbook and I got all the answers correct. The way we had to answer was like this: P(sum of 9 or 10)=7/36. This was sort of hard, but I got 100% on the worksheet, which is why I think is my best work in Math for trimester 3.

Thos are what I think are my best work for trimester 3!

Favorite Songs

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

There are many songs in the world. They also could be in different languages. Many people have opinions on many songs and people don’t like songs that others like. Following with songs, there are many artists in the world and new artists coming up.

I usually listen to my music of Spotify because I can put the songs that I want on my playlist.

My favorite song would probably be Don’t Give Up On Me by Andy Grammer from the movie Five Feet Apart. This song is probably my favorite because it’s from Five Feet Apart and I just like the song in general because of the lyrics and the tune. My second favorite song would probably be 7 Rings by Ariana Grande. I like this song because I think its really good and my friends and I listen to it almost every day. This song is one of my favorites because of the beat and it’s a catchy song.

My third favorite song is Rise Up by Andra Day. This song may seem very sad, but I really enjoy it because, in the lyrics, she wrote that you can rise up any day and become a leader. This song occurs in Grey’s Anatomy during gloomy times. Rise Up is a really long song, but when you listen to the lyrics, you start to have an understanding of what the song actually means.

Those are probably my favorite songs, but they change every time. Yesterday my favorite song was Without Me and today my favorite is Be Alright. I don’t have one specific favorite song that stays every day. My friends and I have different senses in styles of music. Some like rap and some like classic or even modern songs.

Summer!

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

Summer is coming soon and I’m really excited. Some people and I are creating an “SSSS” for someone special. Though I don’t have to go to Summer School, I have to do some work. I usually stay at my grandparent’s house all Summer because my parents have work. Having to stay at my grandparent’s house, limits my time with friends because it’s a 20-minute drive from my grandparent’s house to my apartment.

I hope that my friends and I can hang out or go to the mall sometime in the Summer. If we were to hang out, it would be with hmsleilani, hmsshayann, hmsjenny, hmsjojo, and hmskailey. We would probably have a sleepover or hang out at the mall. We always go to the mall in the Summer and hang out. The 5 of them are going to Summer School, so I’m the only one not.

In the Summer, it’s nice to play with water or go to the beach because you can stay nice and refreshed since it’s pretty hot in Hawaii during the Summer. My family and I usually go to my cousin’s pool or we play with water balloons. My cousins from Okinawa usually come to Hawaii because it’s Summer break. Summer is always a time that I’m looking forward to every year.

Have a great summer!

Track Meet 2019

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

Every year, our school goes to Wahiawa to compete in a track meet against Our Savior Lutheran, Saint Mark, and Trinity Lutheran. We get to pick or events which are either 40-yard dash, 60-yard dash, 80-yard dash, 100-meter run, 200-meter run, 400-meter run, 800-meter run, Relay races (boys, girls, Co-Ed). The Field Events are Shuttle Run, Ladder Ball, Corn Hole, Standing Long Jump, Running Long Jump, Football throw, Softball throw, and Hurdles.

This year I did the 200-meter run, Co-Ed Relay race, Hurdles, Standing Long Jump, and the Shuttle Run. Usually, I do the 100-meter run, Co-Ed Relay race, Hurdles, Running Long Jump, and Ladderball, but this year, I changed it, so I could get a good experience. Our track meets are really fun because you can have a fun time with the other school and competing against your friends. Our track meets are different from other ones, we have grades 5-8 grade competing and in different states, they have it in high school.

So far, every track meet that I’ve been to, it eventually rains and then stops after like 3 minutes. It’s usually a hot day, but it can also be cool. We have to drink lots of water because of how hot it is. Somehow, every year, a tent goes over the bleachers. We get to bring a small snack because we are at the track meet for about 3-4 hours, so we get hungry after a while.

Opihi Field Trip

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

via Google Images
This is what it looked like (somewhat)

We just went on our Opihi Field Trip. This field trip was basically about identifying different algae in certain groups. My group was hmsleilani and hmskylen. There were 3 jobs: Data Collector, Data Reciever, and Wave Watcher. Since the Data Collector had to touch the algae, hmleilani didn’t want to touch the algae, so hmskylen and hmsleilani had to switch jobs.

We were in knee deep water, so hmsleilani was very cautious but she ended up holding on to me while we were walking. Some 8th graders went with us, hmstayne was our photographer. She tried helping us but she got in trouble for helping us so we were on our own. Since we were on our own, we had to follow the procedures that we learned in class.

via Google Images
This is what the quadrat looked like.

The field trip was an adventure. We had to be careful about certain things like sea urchins and sea cucumbers while we were trying to identify certain types of algae. We didn’t see any of the dangerous animals except for Wana which is a sea urchin. We used transect lines and quadrant covers. We found different types of algae along the transect line or the quadrant covers.

Our field trip was really fun!

My Weekend (April 30, 2019 – April 31, 2019)

Hi guys, it’s hmsmarim,

I’m going to talk about my weekend. My weekend was pretty great.

Saturday

On Saturday, I went to a dancing class at 10:00-11:00. We did the normal dances we normally do and we also learned more of a new dance we are learning. After dance class, I had a birthday party to go to. It was my classmate’s birthday party and we had a lot of fun. The people who don’t go to our school anymore went to the birthday party. We had dinner and played Basketball and Volleyball.

Sunday

On Sunday, hmsjojo, hmsleilani, hmsjenny, and hmsshayann and I went to the movies together. We saw Five Feet Apart. All of us cried or teared up because the movie was really sad. At the movies, we had popcorn with many different things. After, we went home and enjoyed the rest of our evening.

That’s it for today!

My 3 Favorite Quotes

Hi guys, it’s hmsmarim,

I am going to be talking about my top 3 favorite quotes. These quotes are from Brainy Quotes.

1. Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God. By: Leo Buscaglia

This quote is one of my favorites. This is one of my favorites because everyone has a purpose on Earth and it’s like a gift from God. Since my family is practically committed to Christianity I follow along, though my parents don’t. I go to church to help little/younger kids at church on Friday nights.

2. You will never win if you never begin. By: Helen Rowland

This quote makes total sense because if you never decide to try something in a competition, you have no guaranteed to win. This quote can inspire many people to try new things and be adventurous. “You will never win if you never begin” is one of my favorites because I always wanted to try out Volleyball, so I tried it and it was probably the best decision I have ever made minus the fact that I am not really good at it.

3. Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me. By: Carol Burnett

This quote can say a lot because sometimes other people try to control your life and you have no say in what you can do. You also don’t have to agree to what other people think of what they are going to do and you think it’s wrong.

That’s it for today! What are your favorite quotes? Let me know in the comments below.

Five Feet Apart Movie Review

Hi guys, it’s hmsmarim,

Today I’m going to do a review on the movie “Five Feet Apart”. If you don’t want spoilers then skip to the end of this post, but if you don’t mind, then read till the end.

Picture taken by me

Five Feet Apart is a Drama/Romantic movie. The main characters are Stella, Will, Poe, and Nurse Barb. Five Feet Apart has many interesting parts to it. Some characters get emotional and the whole film is very serious. It is about Cystic Fibrosis (CF) which is when kids/babies have mucus in their lungs and they can’t breathe well. It can affect your life growing up and you can some people are put on the transplant list for new lungs. When you have CF you have to stay 6 feet apart from other people who have CF because you could end up having that person’s bacteria in you which isn’t good for people with CF.

In Five Feet Apart, many things happen, like, “They have to stay 6 feet apart, but why is it called Five Feet Apart?” Which you can watch the movie to find out why it “changed” from 6 feet to 5 feet apart. This movie was really sad because the characters couldn’t hug or even hold hands, but they have very strong relationships together. They tell each other what had happened in their past and share their emotions. Towards the end, it was very sad and something that should never happen in real life. The very end was incredibly sad and you can reflect on how lucky you are to not have CF because certain things can happen to you.

Some people with CF have seen the movie and don’t think it’s accurate and taken seriously. The movie gives you details to let you know that CF is taken very seriously. People with CF that have seen the movie can reflect what content is right or wrong. In my opinion, I think that the movie producers didn’t want to show what a person with CF goes through because then it would be totally accurate which would seem weird if it is completely correct.

Movie Review

Five Feet Apart was a really good movie from the start and I would rate it a 5 out of 5 because of the content and the detail they put into the movie. I would watch it over and over again. Many people have different opinions and I think that is good because if the producers need feedback, then the different opinions will be taken. It was a really emotional movie to watch and I recommend it to people from ages 12+ because there may contain inappropriate content that isn’t good for younger viewers.

I hope you guys get to watch Five Feet Apart! If you watched it already, let me know how you thought the movie was in the comments below.

TV Shows I Enjoy!

Hi, it’s hmsmarim,

Today I’m going to talk about TV shows I really enjoy. These TV shows/series, are shows that are NOT recommended, though I enjoy them. Some people might not like these show/series, but I’m not offended because many people have different opinions.

Grey’s Anatomy-

via Google Images

Grey’s Anatomy is one of my favorites because it has action and interesting parts that leave you on the edge of your seat. Grey’s Anatomy aired in 2005 which was before I was born. The medical drama series focuses on a group of young doctors at Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital, who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the young doctors and the show’s namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. Meredith goes through many hard times in her life and many tragic events happen. Grey’s Anatomy’s Program Director is Shonda Rhimes.

Station 19-

via Google Images

Stacy McKee, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Paris Barclay serve as executive producers on the series, which is the second spin-off to Grey’s Anatomy. Station 19 is one of my favorites because there are a lot of action parts to the TV show. Station 19 has many characters who try to solve problems and run into some problems. This TV show is really good and again one of my favorites.

Survivor

via Google Images
This logo is one from season 6 of Survivor.

Survivor was created in 2000, 19 years ago. This veteran reality series is hosted by Jeff Probst. There are 18 castaways who are divided into 2 tribes and have to work together to win challenges. If they don’t win the immunity challenge, they go to tribal council where someone will be voted out. The goal is to win $1,000,000 by outplaying, outwitting, and outlasting your opponents.

Survivor is one of my favorites because it’s interesting to see how people win the challenges and who gets voted out in the end. It’s really suspenseful to wait and see who will win.

The World’s Best-

The World’s Best is one of my favorites because we get to see the best of the best throughout the world. There are many people with great talents and they perform it on stage in front of three American judges, the wall of the world (famous people from other countries), and the audience. The World’s Best winner of 2019 was Lydian Nadhaswaram. He’s from India and he’s a pianist. The World’s Best is really a great TV show and I can’t wait until next year.

You win by performing every week with different styles of what you do and compete with the other competitors. You are performance is based on how the judges think your performance is and if it’s a world’s best talent.

There are many more TV shows that I watch but those were my top 4 shows that I watch.

That’s it for today!
